At Valencia Waste Management Limited, we are committed to our Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. As one of the UK’s leading landfill operators our ESG principles are at the foundation of everything we do.
Environmental – Operating, monitoring and restoring all our landfill sites in a compliant, safe and efficient manner to capture methane effectively and preserve the environment.
Social – show consideration and respect for all parties that Valencia interreacts with including customers, employees, suppliers, regulators and the wider communities in which we operate.
Governance – complying with all internal policies and external laws and regulations, not only to the letter but also to the spirit in which they were created.
Our obligation to these principles is intrinsic to our vision of shaping a sustainable future.
A critical component of this sustainable future is our aftercare program that is dedicated to restoring and maintaining our sites post-closure to ensure they contribute positively to the environment and the communities they are part of.
Restoration and Rehabilitation - When a landfill site reaches its capacity, we undertake an extensive restoration and rehabilitation process. This involves contouring the site to blend with the surrounding landscape, planting indigenous trees and vegetation to create habitats for wildlife, and monitoring to ensure the site’s stability and environmental compliance.
Minimising Environmental Impact - We invest heavily and apply industry best practicies to reduce the environmental impact of our operations. This includes robust contractual relationships with industry specialists to maximise methane capture for renewable power generation across all of our sites on a 24/7 basis.
Community Engagement - We believe in keeping an open line of communication with the communities surrounding our sites. We engage local residents and stakeholders in the planning and execution of our restoration projects, ensuring that their perspectives and interests are taken into account.
Enhancing Local Biodiversity - By creating habitats and ecosystems through our restoration projects, we aim to enhance local biodiversity. These reclaimed sites often become local parks, nature reserves or recreational spaces, contributing to the wellbeing of the community.
Long-Term Monitoring and Maintenance
Our commitment does not end with the restoration of the site. We conduct long-term monitoring to ensure that the restored sites continue to thrive. This includes:
Monitoring groundwater and surface water quality
Maintaining and monitoring gas control systems
Ensuring the structural stability of the site
Continually assessing and managing ecological habitats
Partnering for a Sustainable Future
We collaborate with industry experts, environmental agencies and community organisations to innovate and implement the best practices throughout the operational lifetime of the site and into aftercare.
